How to increase the efficiency of the trimmer: change the fishing line to a chain from a chainsaw
Being the owner of a gasoline trimmer, I drew attention to the fact that the fishing line, even the thickest one, cannot cope with young shoots (especially there are a lot of them around tree trunks). You can use knives, but they are not suitable for thin grass (and wearing them specifically to cut a few thick branches is frankly lazy), so I found a great alternative solution.
What you need to have on hand
- We will need the following tool:
- Welding machine;
- Drill, a set of drills for metal;
- Vise;
- Marker and ruler.
From materials:
- Large concave cup used for fixing trimmer blades, flat washer and nut;
- An old chainsaw chain.
Preparatory work: processing the fixing washer
With the help of a ruler, we mark a straight line on the diameter of the concave washer and clamp it in the vice of one of the markings up.
It is better to pre-mark the place of drilling with a core so that the drill does not slip off. We make holes on both sides, first thin, and then with a larger drill — the diameter should be such that the chain passes smoothly.
Installation and fastening of the chain
We pass the chain through the holes, laying it along the inner wall of the washer so that it cannot interfere with the leading axis of the trimmer.
At this stage, it is important to accurately measure the length of the chain from the ends to the washer. It must be the same and not exceed the allowable dimensions, otherwise the protective cover will be immediately destroyed.
From the inside, we securely weld the chain to the washer.
Everything is ready. We put a flat washer on the trimmer axis, our modernized washer and tighten it with a fixing nut.
When performing the above work, you should not only follow the rules for using power tools, but also not neglect personal protective equipment.
Tests
The chain is not a fishing line — its effectiveness exceeded all expectations! It copes well not only with the growth around the trees, but also with impenetrable thickets, including reeds and even thick corn stalks.
Results
As it turned out, the revision is inherently very simple, and with everything you need, it took 10-15 minutes, no more. You just need to have an idea of how to deal with a drill and a welding machine.
The use of a chainsaw chain not only greatly increased the efficiency of the tool, but also reduced its maintenance costs — in any case, I will no longer need trimmer line.
Safety above all!
Do not forget about safety when working with a trimmer! Fragments of bushes scatter over a long distance and with great force. Use personal protective equipment — a special mask, make sure that there are no people and animals around.
