WHAT YOU NEED A PRIMER, TYPES OF PRIMERS 2022. For decorative finishing works, preliminary priming of the surface is required. This rule also applies to walls — a primer is necessary before plastering, painting, wallpapering, etc. It is also important to note that there are currently many types of primers designed for different jobs (Which primer is better).

WHAT IS A PRIMER?

A primer is a special binder that is intended to be applied to the surface in the first place (before gluing wallpaper, painting walls, etc.). In other words, the primer is an adhesive that penetrates deep into the material, thereby leveling the surface and increasing adhesion to any further finish.

WHAT DO YOU NEED A PRIMER FOR?

It is necessary to prime all surfaces that are subject to subsequent processing.

Wall priming — why?

This allows you to solve the following tasks:

  • alignment — creating a uniform smooth surface;
  • neutralization of the smell of paint (if further painting is planned);
  • surface hardening — especially porous and heterogeneous;
  • reduction in paint consumption (glue or other composition);
  • improved adhesion (adhesion) of the base to the finishing layer;
  • masking of some spots on the treated surface;
  • protection from moisture, mold and rot;
  • the ability to apply light colors to dark or multi-colored surfaces;
  • corrosion protection (when applied to metal surfaces).

Note: Thanks to the preliminary priming, you can evenly and accurately glue or paint over any surfaces, including aerated concrete blocks (What is aerated concrete block) and OSB panels. The floor should also be primed before starting to fill it.

WALL PRIMER

Thus, priming of the surface is necessary in the following cases:

  • under liquid wallpaper;
  • under plaster;
  • before wallpapering;
  • after putty;
  • before painting and drawing.

Note: You should also prime the walls before wallpapering after removing the old layer (old wallpaper).

TYPES OF WALL PRIMERS

Currently, the building materials market offers a fairly wide selection of primers of various compositions. The most common ones are listed below:

  • acrylic — the most common primer, suitable for the treatment of all surfaces, except metal. Also, acrylic primer can be enamel, polyurethane or glyphthalic;
  • alkyd — used for pretreatment for fiberglass, wood, PVC panels, tiles, etc.;
  • silicone — usually used as a coating for silicone-based paints;
  • silicate — the basis of such a soil is synthetic potash glass, usually applied as a base for silicate paints;
  • epoxy — resins are at the heart of such a soil, as well as chemical additives are present in the composition. This primer is used to coat metal surfaces;
  • bituminous — used to protect flooring under wooden floors, various types of flooring, under the floor screed (What is a cement screed for a floor), etc.;
  • mineral — based on mineral compounds. This type of soil fits well on porous surfaces, plaster, limestone, etc.

Note: Other types of primers are also on sale — shellac, phosphate, quartz, etc.

HOW CORRECT TO PRIMER?

How to apply a primer to the walls?

For priming work with any type of primer, you will need:

  • paint brushes (painting works, types of brushes) — synthetic are recommended;
  • paint rollers, preferably foam rubber and with a long handle (paint roller, types of rollers);
  • bath for primer;
  • personal protective equipment (goggles and gloves).

Note: It is also quite convenient to apply primer with a spray gun.

   It is necessary to clean the surface of the old coating

Before applying the primer, prepare the surface:

  1. clean from the old coating (wallpaper, plaster, paint, etc.);
  2. remove dust (this can be done with an ordinary vacuum cleaner), greasy stains, etc.;
  3. if necessary, cover the surrounding furniture and interior items with foil, as the primer can leave stains and streaks on them;
  4. level the surface — whole surfaces must be primed, if there are cracks, they should be putty beforehand;
  5. when processing the ceiling, do not stand at the bottom, as the product can get into the eyes. To do this, use a stepladder (construction ladder, types of ladders) and a roller with a long handle;
  6. apply another layer of primer if necessary;
  7. it is not recommended to use an expired primer.

Important! Let the primer coat dry. Therefore, after priming, wait about 24 hours before applying the topcoat.
